Since Liz Cheney was ousted from her leadership position in the House of Representatives, Representative Elise Stefanik (R-NY) has been seen as the likely replacement for the Republican conference chair. Despite receiving a 35% rating from the conservative group, Club for Growth of the time, Stefanik has been endorsed by former President Donald Trump. Cheney was rated 65%.

Representative Chip Roy (R-TX). however, has a rating of 90%.  Roy decided to run for House Republican leadership as well. Roy called Stefanik’s voting record is “atrocious.” As such, he has tried to persuade Republicans to consider a more conservative candidate for leadership.

Trump released a statement reaffirming his support for Stefanik.

"Can't imagine Republican House Members would go with Chip Roy—he has not done a great job, and will probably be successfully primaried in his own district. I support Elise, by far, over Chip!"

Former President Trump has been upset with Rep. Roy because Roy voted against throwing out the Electoral College votes in certain states. While Roy voted against impeachment of Trump, he claimed that his loyalty to the Constitution demanded that he not try to alter the Presidential Election. “That vote may sign my political death warrant, but so be it,” he said.

Many other GOP representatives do not see a chance for Roy.
