Is Albert Mohler the Next President of the SBC?

On Thursday, H.B. Charles, pastor of Shiloh Metropolitan Baptist Church, announced on Twitter that he would nominate Dr. R. Albert Mohler, Jr. as the next president of the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) next June during the denominations annual meeting.

Mohler, who has served as the president of the SBC's flagship seminary, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary (SBTS), for 26 years, responded to Charles' tweet, stating,

Since Mohler's response, numerous church figures (and some political) have already voiced their support for the seminary president, making his election more likely.

Mohler's potential nomination comes at a time when the SBC faces mounting criticism from its conservative members due to their statement on Critical Race Theory and Intersectionality as well as the growing "soft" complementarian sect within the denomination.

SBC members fears of a possible slide into theological liberalism make Mohler an unsurprising presidential candidate as much of the early years of his SBTS presidency were dedicated to returning the otherwise liberal seminary back to biblical orthodoxy.

The conventions next president will be elected at next year's annual meeting on June 9-10, 2020.
