Trump's Vindication
If breaking news on a Sunday doesn’t grab your attention, the news of Russian interference should have. Since May of 2017, the issue at the forefront of American politics has been the topic of Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. Mainstream pundits have used possible collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russian government to call into question the legitimacy of the 2016 election as well as Trump’s presidency itself.
But at last, on Friday of last week, the public was notified that Special Prosecutor Robert Mueller had turned over his findings regarding interference to Attorney General William Barr for review. And on Sunday, a summary of the findings was made known to the public.
In the four-page summary, Attorney General Barr pointed out two important findings. The first was that the Mueller probe found no evidence of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia. The second, regarding obstruction of justice, was that the investigation could not conclude that the President had committed a crime, but also, that it did not exonerate him.
The first reaction from the American people should be a sigh of relief. Left or right, the notion that an American president colluded with a foreign government (a hostile one at that), would be a bad sign for our democracy. This news from the AG summary should instill confidence in the public that our election system is, in fact, trustworthy and that the current presidency is valid.
Of course, this is not how a majority of the public will react, as some mainstream commentators have insisted that a conspiracy has taken place to protect the president. Joy Reid, of MSNBC, has already jumped onto this train by stating on her show, "It feels like the seeds of a cover-up are here.” Certainly, this was to be expected. When “Trump derangement syndrome” was coined, this was what all level-headed Americans had in mind. What many fail to realize is that if the Barr summary was truly contrary to the Russia investigation, Mueller would have immediately stepped out to correct the claims. Yet, no comments have been made. So regardless of the reaction from partisan actors, the report's findings are a win for the American people and democracy.
If that is not your sentiment, just think what would have happened had Trump been found to have colluded. Would an iota of trust, on either side, have been established for the next election or any after that? Most likely not.
Second, Americans should be prepared to go through another monotonous news cycle of liberal propaganda. With the Mueller report punting on whether or not Trump obstructed justice, many on the left are making this issue the new battle cry from now until the next election. For sure, the left is correct in saying that the investigation’s findings should be made public, but it would be foolish to think that even a full exoneration from charges would somehow appease them.
Just like everyone else, I am for transparency as it relates to any investigation, but let’s not kid ourselves into thinking that the buck stops here. The left opposes Trump wholesale, and anything less than impeachment will not be adequate for them. Donald Trump Jr. was right when he made the observation that “if Donald Trump, today, came out in favor of oxygen, the left would be against it.”
The Mueller report vindicates Trump, and the American people should find solace in that.
